Bling Bling! And maiden!

So when I left off the quad was flight ready, but not exactly aesthetically where I hoped it would be:

Over the last few days I've accrued some minor, purely cosmetic upgrades.  These include black nylon spacers sized to fit within the landing legs, along with anodized black steel 4-40 sized socket cap screws to replace the aluminum.  Similarly, I used some plastic black spiral wire tubing to encapsulate the ESC servo leads and Rx servo leads, hopefully resulting in a "stealthy" all black build.

Lastly, at the suggestion of kevinv033, and supported by all of TGG, I've added a top plate over the Jes111 protected CopterControl board.  I've already broke it once, and I think this is the rare case where double-bagging is a-ok...

So, here in her nearly final form, is The Yeti.  From the side, top and complete perspectives.

Some of the more observant might notice how a few of the legs are missing.  Well, the maiden flight went very well all things considered.  However, the landing gear must be some sort of money making scheme from Hoverthings!  I say this in jest, to be clear, but none of my landings were especially hard and I still managed to snap them like twigs.  I'll be removing the surviving two landing gear, and replacing them with sections of water tubing until I have the quad locked in.  Then I'll transfer over to some padding under the lower 4-tabbed plate.

I haven't had the chance to weigh the final build yet, including my standard 3300mAh battery, but I can tell already that she is voluptuous.  To put it kindly.  This translates into a bit of a sluggish feel, but I also used only the stock PID settings for the maiden.  Overall, she flew very well.  I'll try tuning the quad up over the next few weeks and see how responsive she can get. May also switch to 10x4.5 props, instead of the 8x4.5 I am currently using.  In rate mode, which is the only mode I flew the HT-FPV frame in due to my toasting of the CopterControl board, The Yeti handled significantly better than than the HT-FPV.  To be honest, I am not sure how much tuning I even really need to do.

This was also my first flight using the CopterControl board in attitude mode.  Holy fuck wow!  Excuse my language, but what a great feeling knowing the CopterControl has your back.  I can see the appeal to flying mainly in attitude mode, it is like having training wheels on a jet plane.  A lot of fun, and if you tweak out a bit just let the stick center and the CopterControl reach down and rescue you.  I will have to be careful to not become complacent and ignore my rate mode skills....

As I tune and optimize the quad I will update with the results.

Sweet build!
