Would this hexacopter frame work as a FPV quadcopter?

The FPV frames can get kind of expensive. I'm wondering if one could take a cheap Hobbyking H550 hexicopter frame and remove two of the opposing arms to make an FPV quadcopter out of it. The remaining front arms would be spaced far enough to get the props out of view. Is there any reason this wouldn't work? If so, do you think it would fly okay?

I think that should work and in fact someone over at Multirotorforums.com has built a similar thing he's calling an XY8. It would have to be tuned well to compensate for the asymmetrical layout much like what has been happening with the HTFPV.

check it out here: http://www.multiroto...1132-XY-8-Build

Would be awesome to see something like this work with CopterControl/CC3D. I say try it out and see if you can make it work. I have a F550 as well that I was going to use for my TBS Discovery but would love to see what you come up with. Get after it.

Why is this? Is it because of the asymmetrical layout or is there another reason?
Does anyone know if the H550 hexacopter uses the same arms as the smaller Hobbyking Q450? I suspect the Q450 quadcopter frame has shorter arms but maybe it has the same arms and it's just the center plates on the H550 that are larger. I've already ordered the Q450 but I'll need to frabricate some landing gear if I want to mount my HD camera underneath so the props are out of view.

Juz was taking the piss

no issue with what you want to do, been done before.

you will need to run a higher inner kp on the pitch axis, or increase the mix value on the pitch axis to compensate (as the motors are closer to the centre line in the pitch axis, they have less effect, so need either more gain or more "mix" to be as effective as the roll control) wont be much, maybe 20-30% more gain (i.e. if roll gain =0.001 then pitch will probably be 0.0013)

LOL. I'm such a noob. Thanks for the replies. As I mentioned, I've got some Q450 frames on the way. I might try making a quad out of the H550 hexacopter especially if I can use the arms from the Q450 quadcopter as spares. If I do, I'll report back about how it flies. $27 for a FPV quadcopter frame with an integrated PCB board that comes with two spare arms is pretty darn cheap.

Attached File  Y6 concept based on F550.jpg   48.31K   47 downloadsI'm planning on using a similar genuine DJI flamewheel F550 and turning it into a Y6 configuration.(This has been tried on RCgroups)
I like the Y6 configuration over a quad. I read somewhere that they are more stable over a quad and have motor redundancy.
Here are some photos that I took from RCgroups.Attached File  Y6 concept based on F550 2.jpg   55.59K   82 downloadsAttached File  Y6 concept based on F550 3.jpg   78.55K   80 downloadsAttached File  Y6 concept based on F550 4.jpg   66.95K   63 downloads
Still waiting for all the motors and parts from Hobby king to try this Y6 configuration.

Steverino and AeroR ,

Did you get them flying?

I ordered two of these just last night with the same thing in mind, then ran across your thread while searching google to see if someone else had tried it. I was thinking the exact same thing for the fpv quad and was thinking of trying to get a Y4 going too. Should be fun! I think it should work.

I ordered the $14 frames without the pcb.

Britt - you will be disapointed with a y4 - the yaw authority is piss weak, only suitable for flying indoors - not enough to overcome a breeze

Matt- Do you think Y6 could get more stable over quad?

I have the frames but I haven't had the time to build it yet. That Y-6 looks really interesting. Maybe I'll go that route instead. I like the motor redundancy. I accidentally ordered these 750 KV motors when I meant to order the 1250KV "Juz" motors. I'm wondering if the 750KV motors will have enough RPMs when running on my 3 cell battery packs.
