the make bot and ones like them are kind of boring but this type / style is interesting and i dont see why it couldn't be changed a bit in to a camera gimble

I've seen one of these full sized at a robotic arm company. They can go so fast as pick and place machines it's crazy! The one that I saw was picking up poker chips off of a conveyor belt at over 250 chips per minute! Precision is there as well. These would not be used for cnc purpouses because getting good vertical hold of the bit while cutting would be interesting, but as a 3d printer, I think that would be awesome! Great find.

That first printer seems really well thougt out looks really neat! Things are evolving very fast nowadays :)

We have a ultimaker here and i must say it's really handy for rapid prototyping. We've been thinking for some time now to make a camera mount with stepper motors but it's kinda difficult :S. No real coding skills :S Dji and photohigher seem to have thougt this out and came up with some really nice gimballs (i think they use stepper motors) but at a very high price :(
Hopefully someone smart takes one appart and makes it a diy project :) We'll see....

Yeah, I just checked it out on Thingiverse. A few minor parts are 3D printed, but most are standard materials. I wish they were selling a comprehensive kit. I have been shopping around for a 3D printer for some time and none offer the print size and resolution of this one (unless you want to spend 10K). Here is the link if anyone wants it: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:17175

I've been looking recently at the "Canfield Joint" - it's public domain, invented by Dr Stephen Canfield.

Three rotary actuators - looks pretty simple to make - but it would need some clever mathematics for the control. Interesting possibilities as a camera gimbal since it could correct small translational errors as well as rotational errors.

Even more OT - but, dammit, this story breaks your heart! I'd call this "unfair advertising"!

I stand corrected. I still doubt the precision of the thing, but hell, it works! Good find.
