I thought now might be a good time to start on a build thread for my new quadcopter.

Specs:
Motors: BP2217-9
Props: 10x4.7 APC
ESC: 30A PLUSH
Avionics stack:
* DragonOSD
* DragonLink
* CC
* XBee PRO for TLM
* Whatever else I want to try out :)
Power: Custom CNC'd double sided copper PCB substrait
Battery: 15C 5Ah 3S

Frame materials:
* Rusty BQ-2 (discontinued)
* Rusty CM-1 landing gear
* Floating camera mount plate
* Loads of standoffs and 4-40 hardware

Camera gear:
* GoPro HERO HD

Note the use of the extra landing gear plate to cover the CC board. That plate came with the CM-1, but because I wanted a slot to put the battery, I had to order a "Floating camera mount plate" from Rusty in it's place. Instead of using the heavy frame plate to cover the CC, I used the light(er) LG plate which looks like it worked out really well. I did have to remove the rear standoff so that it would not block the USB Minbi B connector on the CC, however.

Details as they come....

Nice setup ..

I am curious as to why you selected the 30A esc. The motors you selected are 20 amp max draw ( Actually 18 I think is listed in most specs for it ) ..

Also that battery at 15c would be rated at about 75 amps continuous. Might end up puffing it if you ever actually draw max amps.

I really like the use of the tail blocks to hold the arms. I wanted to also do that , however I could not find a source for them at a reasonable price.  I notice the gap , are they the proper size for the tail booms ? Or just not tightened down ?

Looking good , cant wait to see videos of your maden.

Hi Kevo,

Quote

I am curious as to why you selected the 30A esc

I selected these primarily because they were pretty much just as cheap as the 25A ESCs, and the weight penalty was quite small. The worst I could do is underutilize them, but them I also wanted to use them in other applications.

I actually had a 4.4Ah battery that was rated at 15C I used for a heavier aircraft. That battery was great until I accidentally got one of the balance wires jammed in my drawer and yanked it clean out :wacko:

They are pretty tight, and yes, they are the correct size (12mm OD)

I'll be following this build Chris. I want to know what your going to do with power distribution.
I am building a UAP1 right now, for FPV/AP.

As am I Juz - UAP1 for FPV/AP - but it's my first quad so we'll see how it goes.  I'll be putting up a build log at some point.  All my stuff just arrived so I'm going through it all figuring out what's what.

Oh yeah - that was me.  Hence my award.

As I told Rusty "If you can't go big, go home."

I could call not fair, the only thing I didn't order from Rusty that Greg ordered was the Avrotos. Oh well, at least we all know who taunted Greg into buying one of these things in the first place ;-)

Anyway, next thing on the list is power distribution, which is only limited by the fact that my HK order hasn't arrived yet which has all my silicon wiring, as well as my new battery and EC3 connectors. Until then, I'm going to go ahead and start milling the PCB that will be in the center of it all.

The plan here is to make a "dog bone" type shape with a total of 4 fingers + 2 that will stick out directly on either end for the mains connection, as well as two JST lines for accessories and any other random electronics that need to be powered.

CC arrived today, so did wiring and the new 5Ah battery.

I mounted the CC, configured it and all, but other than that, there isn't really much to see. It still looks the same since the "crash helmet" as Greg calls it hides the CC completely. Mounting on the BQ-2 could not have been any more trouble-free. Slap down 4 1/2" standoffs and some nylon screws and done.

CC setup was pretty straight forward, I just followed the video.

Tomorrow will bring the milling of the power harness, photos will be forthcoming :)

Greg's ship is also taking shape, I talked with him on skype for a while chatting about location of the RX and all

Photo post!

Milled power distro boards today. We milled the first one, but an error in the drawing resulted in some nasty mistakes on the final part. The images in this post are from the first board we tried. I had to leave the CNC while the fixed part was being milled, so no photos of it.

The plan is to solder cables at 90 degree angles to the fingers of the board.Then, heatshrink will simply be slipped over the entire thing.

The board is double sided, so positive will go on top and gnd on the bottom.

The extra wide copper "trace" on one end is for the mains connection, and the skinnier one on the other side is for low amperage auxiliary power.

The defects can be seen in the final photo in the series, note how the copper does not line up properly, it's not symmetrical as it should have been.

Future revs of this board may be a percentage smaller. I'm not really sure right now, I need to weight it to find out if I want to try and slim it down a bit.

What's the "Huge Order?"

Anyway, not huge but a UAP1 Y6 nonetheless.

I'm hoping it flies as good as it looks,..  I was planning on 11" props, what would you suggest?

I don't want to steal the thunder from Chris's thread, I have a thread for this Y6, its not really a build thread but I have some questions, pictures and certainly open to suggestions.

http://forums.openpi...g-a-y6-with-cc/

Chris, its difficult to judge how big this board is from the picture, I was surprised how small the CC board was judging from pictures of it, is this strictly for a quad or could it be used for a HEX or Y6?  Are you planing to sell these?

UAP1 frame, 4 avroto motors, CC, and a CM2 mount.
