Maybe having those short-circuits messed up the JTAG. Maybe inserting it backwards (in a desperate attempt to see any result) messed it up. If you've ever tried it you'll know - the header solders on quite easily, but removing it is a b@@@@!

That I can rule out.  I usually use trial and error on new boards :)

Dave very kindly sent me FTDI-OpenODC-x64 - installed it, ran it - but exactly the same problem :(, so it's not a software/driver issue.

Then I pulled the PC (XP Pro) from my CNC setup and installed the FTDI 32-bit OpenOCD (that José sent me) - guess what? Exactly the same :o, so it's not an issue with W7x64 or my PC.

Which leaves either the JTAG or the CC board (which is fully functional in every other way). I don't see that it would be the CC board but it also seems odd that it would be the JTAG, which seems to be "working". Really very strange.

Unfortunately I cannot try my other CC board - three pads pulled off the board whilst removing the header the last time   (it's functional but not for JTAGing).

That JTAG was the one I have been using for ages so I think you can rule that out. It can be the CC board either a connection or a busted processor pin. You can easally check the first with a continuity check.
Life is just a game, but atleast the graphics are awesome!

That's what I figured with the JTAG. Since the "symptom" has been consistent from the start, I also don't believe that I've killed it with my amateur meddling.

I've just checked - I have continuity between the relevant pads and pins 7, 34, 37, 38 and 39 and no shorts between any of them. No sign (with a high power magnifier) of broken processor pins - but I could have an "NC" inside the package, I guess.

This is really strange!

Jeremy if you want you can send me your CC and your JTAG and I can have a look. It should take about 3 days for you to get them back.
